DOCENT
Primary Function: A docent is an ambassador and teacher for visitors of Price Tower Arts Center. Because of being both a historical landmark building as well as an art museum our docents conduct organized, educational tours of the 1) Price Tower and 2) the Museum’s temporary exhibition. Docents are asked to be the guardians of the museum and the tower, reminding visitors to obey the rules of the gallery and not to touch the exhibits.
Description of Duties: 1) Tower Tour: Conduct a group of eight visitors through a one hour tour of the tower. The tour starts on the first floor and then moves directly to the top three floors. 2) Museum Exhibition Tours: Provide individuals or school groups with a ½ hour guided tour of the temporary exhibition in the museum’s gallery. Answer visitors’ questions about the exhibition. Provide school groups with educational materials prepared by the education department to foster in gallery learning experiences. Ensure that visitors to Price Tower Arts Center have a positive experience. Encourage visitors to return and sample the rich variety of changing exhibitions we offer.
Time Commitment: A minimum of 2 tours monthly (1 weekday and 1 weekend), approximately two hours total per month. Tours are given Tuesday through Sunday. Docents should arrive 15 minutes prior to tour. Attend training sessions and curatorial walk-through of new exhibitions. Attend special events when there is a docent all-call for extra tours and support.
Skills: Tower tour docents must be physically fit (able to climb stairs) and must be able to project vocally. No prior art training is required.
Training: Docents will be given all the information necessary to give an informative and comprehensive tour. In order to acquire the knowledge needed to be a successful docent at Price Tower Arts Center, all docents will need to attend 6 hours of instructional training. These training sessions are held on two consecutive Saturdays from 10:00 until 1:00 p.m. You will then need to shadow tour with five different docents and listen to their tours before touring on your own. Since the museum has changing exhibitions (approximately 3 per year) docents will need to attend the curatorial-walk thru for each exhibition.
Job Benefits: Tours provide contact with the Frank Lloyd Wright community, artist and architects from around the world. Receive a 20% discount in The Wright Place museum store on your volunteer days. A limited number of complimentary tour passes are available for you and your family and friends. Invitation to Volunteer Appreciation events through out the year and be eligible for other volunteer incentive programs.
